The Batesville Area Arts Council is pleased to present Fading Away, an exhibition by Beverly Buys, at the BAAC Gallery on Main (226 E Main St) October 3 – November 18, 2023. Buys is a retired educator based out of Hot Springs, AR who received her MFA from the University of Memphis and taught photography at Henderson University for 19 years.

Beverly Buys finds inspiration in the Arkansas Delta Region and its enduring remnants, capturing the essence of a place where history clings tenaciously. In her meticulous, slow photography process, Buys crafts prints that, like memories, bear a rough and uneven texture. Buys states, "The weather, the way the light falls, and the seasons and their effects on my subjects are so intertwined that they too become a primary concern in my photographs." Through a unique technique involving film and cyanotype-coated paper, she exposes her prints to the sun, determining exposure times by instinct and the discerning eye. Her aim is to kindle reflection and curiosity, inviting viewers to delve into the truth within her evocative creations.

The gallery reception for this exhibition will be held on Friday, November 10, from 5 - 7 p.m. with a brief artist talk at 6 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Batesville Area Arts Council is pleased to announce Juli Howard as the new Gallery Assistant for the organization as of August 26, 2023.

Kim Whitten, BAAC Board President said, “We are excited to welcome Juli to the Batesville Area Arts Council team! Her educational background in the arts and passion for serving the Batesville community will be an incredible asset. With the addition of the gallery assistant position a couple of years ago and under Carly Dahl’s leadership, the Batesville Area Arts Council has grown and expanded programming. Juli’s experience will no doubt help us continue that growth and fulfill our mission of enriching our community through the arts. We hope residents and visitors to Main Street will stop by the gallery and welcome Juli in her new role.”

As Gallery Assistant, Juli will assist in programming for BAAC, which includes gallery exhibitions, workshops, and fundraising. “I am absolutely delighted to serve as the Gallery Assistant for the Batesville Area Arts Council! Having participated in their programs in the past, I look forward to supporting the gallery as a member of the BAAC team and connecting with the community through the arts. The Arts Council does such important work in making art accessible, and I am grateful to be a part of it,” says Juli about her new position.

The Lyon College Kresge Gallery will showcase the two-dimensional works of artist Alexandra Giannell, assistant professor of painting and drawing at Utah Valley University, from now through Friday, Nov. 3, in the historic Alphin Humanities Building on the Lyon College campus, 2300 Highland Rd., Batesville.

There will be a reception and artist talk on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 5-6:30 p.m. in the gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

“Unbound” consists of select abstract two-dimensional works by Giannell, which consider the broader theme of restriction and expansion. The compilation of oil paintings and graphite drawings is comprised of three of Giannell’s currently developing series --“Breathturn,” “Fallacy of Structure” and “Inside on the Outside,” all of which attempt to confront and unpack aspects of contemporary and historical displacement, incarceration and genocide, informed by Giannell’s time and research in as an artist in residence with The Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project collaborating in men’s medium security prisons as well as with The Pienkow Foundation in Poland studying the Holocaust’s Majdanek Concentration Camp in 2019.

Exploring conversations of perception and architectural structures of penitence, the works often allude to landscapes of such control while simultaneously emitting qualities of freedom or being unbound. This tension is enhanced through the symbiosis of ephemeral qualities and guttural, physical mark-making processes in the work, visually charging the gallery space and passages between.

Giannell is an American artist who also spent several years growing up in Europe. She earned a diploma in visual arts from the North Carolina School of the Arts before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts cum laude in painting with a minor in art history from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Master of Fine Arts summa cum laude in painting from Clemson University in South Carolina.

Currently, Giannell lives and works in Utah as an assistant professor of painting and drawing at Utah Valley University.

Kresge Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. Admission is free.
